The first day of Donora Historical Society’s annual Cement City Home and Walking Tour will be held the same day as the borough’s fall festival next month, and organizers say it presents a unique opportunity to spend the day in town.

The Cement City tour is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29. The fall festival will be held at Palmer Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 28. The schedule would allow visitors to stop by the park for food truck offerings, high-end craft vendors and music before hitting the historic tour.

Cement City was the inspiration for the 2018 Carnegie Science Center’s Miniature Railroad & Village. This is the ninth annual Cement City tour and it is the 102nd year for the National Historic District that was completed in 1917.

The homes were quickly made to house the rapidly growing workforce of the American Steel and Wire Co.  The company reached out to Thomas Edison for ideas about designing the new homes, as  he was the most prominent person associated with the concrete housing movement at the time.
