For the fifth time in as many years, Belle Vernon Area rules the Gold Bowl. Formerly the Pyrex Bowl, Belle Vernon now hosts the 7-on-7 passing tournament on the gold turf of James Weir Stadium.
While the tournament’s name has changed, the results haven’t as the Leopards continue to dominate the event.
BVA finished a perfect 7-0 Saturday, knocking off upstart Frazier in the championship game, 34-12.
This year’s event featured the Leopards, who also had a junior-varsity team participate, along with McKeesport, Connellsville, the Commodores, Burrell, Southmoreland and Yough.
“The event obviously started as a Mon Valley thing, but due to scheduling conflicts and stuff like that, we’ve kind of expanded the Valley a little bit,” BVA head coach Matt Humbert said. “I thought the competition was really good.”
