Rostraver Township has a new ally in the ongoing investigation into operations at the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill.
Solicitor Timothy Maatta said he sent a letter to Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck in late May asking him to investigate whether or not the landfill is allowing leachate, which is waste water produced from Marcellus Shale fracking, to get into the Monongahela River.
He also asked Peck to have air, ground and water quality tests conducted at and around the landfill, the township and the river to find out if residents of Rostraver and other neighboring Westmoreland County municipalities, like Monessen, are being exposed to any other potentially hazardous or environmentally unfriendly materials that may be coming from the landfill.
During Wednesday’s commissioner’s meeting, Maatta said Peck responded to his letter “immediately,” and requested state Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office keep Westmoreland County and Rostraver Township officials “in the loop” about the investigation.
