It was a bittersweet event for the Anders family this week as the first ever Sam’s Symphony of Love Scholarship was awarded.

Samantha Anders, 14, took her life in October behind her family’s Fallowfield Township home as a result of bullying.

Several months ago, her parents, Gregg and Joyce Anders, established a foundation in her memory and in a short time raised more than $20,000. They received a $7,500 match from the Community Foundation of Fayette County to award a scholarship to a creative Charleroi student less than six months later.

On Tuesday, during a meet-and-greet awards ceremony in Uniontown, Charleroi Area senior Sydney Bieliski received the $1,000 scholarship. She sat down with the Anders family to talk about what the scholarship means to her plans for her future, but it wasn’t their first time meeting.
