While three local track athletes came away with WPIAL championships at Thursday’s meet at Slippery Rock, more from the area will join them at Shippensburg University next weekend for the PIAA state championships.

In Class 2A, boys and girls, the top five finishers of each event punched their ticket to the state meet. Those who finished in sixth through eighth place needed to hit the state-qualifying standard. In 3A, the top four finishers qualify along with those finishing in fifth through eighth place who hit the state qualifying mark.

Class 2A boys

More than any classification, there are 10 local state qualifiers along with two medalists from the Class 2A boys. They’ll be joining Monessen high jump champion Darnel Howell and California’s shot put champion Jelani Stafford at Shippensburg.

Stephen Frost of Elizabeth Forward will compete in two races at the state event.
