Central Elementary’s Cooper Weagley outlasted more than 50 students in the Elizabeth Forward third-grade spelling bee on Thursday night.
Sponsored annually by the Elizabeth Rotary Club, the district-wide spelling bee gives students an opportunity to show off their skills and gain confidence.
The Rotary club began partnering with the district three years ago to host the event, which grows in participation each year.
To help prepare for the competition, each student was supplied with a dictionary in the fall through the Dictionary Project, a nonprofit organization that works with Rotarians to help students become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.
