California University of Pennsylvania held its 11th annual Conference on Homeland and International Security on Friday with a focus on community relations with police officers and the obstacles and challenges of protecting places of worship.
Gregory Mullen, who was chief of police in Charleston, S.C., during the June 2015 shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, delivered the keynote address in the Performance Center of the Natali Student Center. The conference was organized by Cal U and the U.S. Department of Criminal Justice.
Members of the public, including law enforcement officers, criminal justice professionals, Cal U students and area spiritual leaders, attended to hear about the importance of community trust and partnership with police departments, and the physical security challenges that arise when an active shooter situation occurs in a house of worship.
Mullen, now associate vice president for public safety and chief of police at Clemson University, was Charleston’s chief police from 2006 to 2017. He coordinated incident action planning, crisis communications and media management surrounding the mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church.
