Thousands of Mon Valley residents were without power Sunday as wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour swept through the area.

The high winds caused building damage, uprooted trees and brought down power lines in several areas.

As of press time Sunday, Duquense Light reported about 70 active power outages affecting more than 55,000 customers, and West Penn Power estimated approximately 90,000 of its customers were without power.

Duquense Light reported more than 200 wires and 50 poles were down across its service area, causing more than 200 workers to put in 16-hour shifts in an attempt to restore service.
