While several teams have failed in their attempt to topple highly ranked IUP this season, the blueprint for defeating the Crimson Hawks can evidently be found in California, Pa.
For the second time this season, the No. 18 Vulcans knocked off the third-ranked team in the country, using its stingy defense and a big second quarter effort to come away with a 73-65 victory in PSAC West action Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
In the teams’ previous meeting Jan. 23, IUP was the No. 1 team in the nation.
Cal U (22-3, 16-3) outscored the Crimson Hawks, 24-13, in the second quarter Saturday, using a 22-6 run in the frame to turn an eight-point deficit into an eight-point lead at halftime.
