An alleged thief who was tackled by an off-duty police chief last week has been charged in connection with a retail theft that happened earlier that week.
Gregory A. Sokol, 32, of Ohio Street in Pricedale was caught at Walmart in Rostraver Township by Monessen police Chief Jim Smith after allegedly stealing a Robot Braava Jet around 7 p.m. Feb. 11.
Smith and Sokol were at the entrance at the same time when an alarm went off. Smith reported that Sokol took off running and pushed him out of the way.
“I hear the greeter say, ‘Sir, stop,’ and Sokol bumps into me, pushes me out of his way and starts out the door,” Smith said, adding that he could plainly see a box was shoved under Sokol’s shirt.
