As snow and freezing rain swept through the Mon Valley early Friday morning, several area schools were closed and drivers were left to navigate slippery conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, areas in Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland and Fayette counties saw three to four inches of snow and less than half an inch of ice.

Many area schools canceled for the third day in a row Friday, following two days of sub-zero temperatures.

In Speers on Twilight Hollow Road, first responders were dispatched to the area twice for head on collisions.
