Elliott Group’s Donora Service Center is preparing to move the largest steam turbine the site has every manufactured with the help of remote control.
Friday and Saturday, Elliott will be shipping its largest turbine from the Donora location on Scott Street Extension to a petrochemical complex on the Ohio River currently under construction.
The logistics involved in such a move are extraordinary.
The steam turbine weighs 342,000 pounds — 171 tons — and its movement will require two transports.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, the unit will be transported on a specialized 20-axle electronic steering platform trailer. The equipment, powered by integral electric motors, will be controlled by an operator using a hand-held radio similar to a gigantic remote-controlled toy.
