Multiple-vehicle I-70 crash snarls traffic

Interstate 70 westbound was closed for a few hours Wednesday morning in South Huntingdon Township after a multi-vehicle crash, according to PennDOT and a Westmoreland 911 dispatch supervisor.

The crash was reported between two to three vehicles around 7:15 a.m. in South Huntingdon. A dispatch supervisor said there were at least two people injured, one of whom was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter. Traffic was moving around 9 a.m.

The westbound lanes were closed between the Smithton and Route 51 exits, followed by a single-lane closure, according to PennDOT. The eastbound side was closed for a short time for first responders. Traffic maps at the time of the closure showed significant delays in the eastbound lanes as well as Routes 51 and 981 in Rostraver.

Photos posted on social media by Rostraver Township Fire Department showed a tri-axle truck on its side off the highway. First responders extricated a person from a commercial vehicle before they were taken by medical helicopter to a hospital, the department reported.

State police had not released any information Wednesday afternoon.
