Never forget
TODAY is a milestone anniversary, the 25th, of the terrorism attacks that took at least 2,977 lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The deadliest attack on the United States of America, 9/11 is seared indelibly in our nation’s memory.
As with another day of infamy at Pearl Harbor nearly 60 years earlier, just about everyone still living can recall where they were and what they were doing when they heard about it.
The memorial services today are an occasion to renew the vow “Never again.”
More importantly, they honor the nearly 3,000 men, women and children who paid the highest possible price on 9/11. They are the reasons to remember.
The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, keeps moving deeper into the past, yet even after 25 years, the memories of that horrific day remain fresh and painful to those of us who lived through it.
They say that time heals all wounds. As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we can see in some measure, that’s true. Buildings can be rebuilt. Memorials can honor the dead. But for the thousands of families who lost loved ones that day, life will never be the same. And our country, too, was forever changed.
Sept. 11, 2001, changed us all. But it has not dampened our resolve for freedom and the American way of life.
Those are things no terrorist attack can ever take away.
