UPMC in its latest financial disclosure reported a more than 30% decline in operating income in the first half of the year, compared to the same period last year.
The healthcare giant said its operating income for the first six months of 2025 totaled $243 million, down from $349 million.
Operating revenues, though, were up almost 2.5% in the first six months of 2026, reaching nearly $17 billion compared to $16.5 billion for the same time last year.
The $106 million decline in operating income was driven largely by lower inpatient volumes in hospitals, UPMC said.
The health system reported more than $9.7 billion of cash and investments as of June 30.
Total membership in the UPMC Insurance Services Division slid to 3.98 million in June from 4.15 million a year ago.
UPMC said it was continuing to monitor the impact of President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which is expected to reduce funding for health care services and diminish the number of people with insurance coverage.
Changes could begin as early as this year, UPMC said, and may worsen in the coming years as other provisions — like Medicaid work requirements — take effect.
UPMC’s financial report also spotlighted several accomplishments from the first portion of the year, like the opening of the new UPMC Children’s Heart Institute in Lawrenceville in June and an agreement to take over Trinity Health System, a four-hospital network in Ohio.
Last week, Highmark Health, UPMC’s rival and the parent company of Allegheny Health Network, reported $805 million in operating profit on $17.5 billion in revenue during the first half of the year, up from $121 million in operating profit and $16.5 billion in revenue a year earlier.
Highmark’s surge was driven largely by the rebound of its insurance arm, Highmark Health Plans.
UPMC’s revenue reached nearly $17 billion in the first half of the year, a nearly 2.5% increase from the same time last year.
