KeyBank’s branch in California to close Aug. 28
Bank officials said the growth of online banking led to the decision.
Customers who bank at KeyBank’s California branch will soon have to travel to Monongahela or another nearby location after the bank announced it will permanently close the office Aug. 28.
The branch, located at 256 Third St., will consolidate into KeyBank’s Monongahela branch at 318 W. Main St., approximately 11.8 miles away.
The consolidation is scheduled to take effect at 3 p.m. Aug. 28.
The branch’s night deposit box and ATM will close earlier that day at 8 a.m., according to a notice posted at the location.
KeyBank said the move reflects changing customer banking habits and a growing preference for digital banking services.
“How clients interact with our branches continues to change at a rapid pace and we have seen a steady increase in client preference for digital banking,” the bank said in a statement.
The bank said customers will not need to take any action, as all accounts will be automatically transferred to the Monongahela branch.
“As this process moves forward, our focus is on making any changes as smooth as possible for our clients and teammates,” the statement said.
KeyBank said its branch network remains an important part of its business despite the consolidation.
“Our branches are and always will be a source of strength for KeyBank. Our branch network and teammates are a critical way we differentiate,” the bank said.
In addition to the Monongahela office, customers may continue banking at any KeyBank location, including branches in Uniontown, Elizabeth and Mount Pleasant.
The Uniontown branch is located at 19 S. Beeson Blvd., about 17 miles from the California office. The Elizabeth branch is at 810 McKeesport Road, approximately 26 miles away, while the Countryside Shopping Center branch at 100 Countryside Plaza in Mount Pleasant is about 32 miles from California.
The Monongahela branch, where California customers will be transferred, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. It is closed Sundays.
The California closure is the first confirmed KeyBank branch consolidation in the Pittsburgh region announced for 2026.
Town hall today
Cfsbank is inviting residents, business owners, community organizations and local leaders to attend a community town hall meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss the future of banking in California.
With the closure of the KeyBank branch, California is expected to lose its only local banking office, leaving residents and businesses without a bank physically located in the community. In response, cfsbank is exploring the possibility of establishing a full-service branch in the borough.
The town hall will provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the bank, ask questions, share feedback and discuss the financial needs of the community.
“Community banks play an important role in the towns they serve,” said John Gill, president and CEO of cfsbank. “When we learned California was at risk of losing its only local banking office, we felt it was important to start by listening. This town hall is an opportunity for us to hear directly from residents, business owners, and community leaders about what they value in a local bank and how cfsbank can help meet those needs.”
Attendees will hear about cfsbank’s community banking philosophy, its commitment to local decision-making, and the services it offers to individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and municipalities. Representatives from the bank will also be available to answer questions and gather feedback that will help shape future plans.
The town hall will take place at Hollywood Pavilion, located at 313 Third St. in the borough.
