Dedication ceremony for McKeesport Civil War soldiers
The Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War A.P. Davis Camp hosted a dedication ceremony Saturday at the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery for two of the soldiers, William Sample (1844-1898) and John Corey (1838-1884), who carried the dying President Abraham Lincoln from Ford’s Theater to the Petersen House on April 14, 1865. Both of these men returned to the Monongahela River Valley after their service, and their story was unknown to many of their neighbors. Louise Henry and Lara Lutz, fifth- and sixth-generation relatives of Sample, assumed it was something only their families knew. Sample and Corey were last to receive official markers recognizing their service to President Lincoln. Jabez Griffith died in 1898 and is buried in Richland Cemetery in Dravosburg. Jacob Soles died in 1936 and is buried in Monongahela Cemetery in Braddock. City of McKeesport Mayor’s Office
