2 people attacked by their own dog hospitalized; house later condemned
Two people suffered life-threatening injuries after being attacked by their dog in an Elizabeth Township home.
According to police Chief Ken Honick, police and EMS were called to the home at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to 5915 Meade St. in the Boston area of the township.
The victims, one male and one female, barricaded themselves in a bathroom and bedroom respectively. They were able to get their 5-year-old child safely out of the home. The child was placed with a guardian of the family, Honick said.
Police entered the home through the back of the house, and had to use lethal force to kill the dog. Another dog was removed from the home by an animal control officer and placed with a neighbor while a third dog was also removed.
The male was taken to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where he was in stable condition as of press time.
The woman was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she underwent surgery Wednesday morning. Her condition was not available.
Police have not released the names of the couple.
Honick said the home was in deplorable condition. Later in the day, the doors and windows were boarded up and it was condemned by code enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing.
