MMVTA issues guidelines to aid riders during severe weather

As winter reaches its peak in the Mon Valley, severe weather conditions have started affecting the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority routes.
The MMVTA issued guidelines to assist riders in navigating routes during winter weather and offers regular updates on its social media platforms. To help riders navigate inclement weather, MMVTA has developed a three-tiered color plan of conditional notification.
Green would indicate normal operations for routes, yellow would indicate a higher accumulation of snow with route modifications, and red would indicate a significant amount of snow or critical road conditions, with a major route change. If it is red, it could mean some parts of the route could be suspended.
“When MMVTA implements the Winter Weather Service Delivery Plan, customers will be notified by MMVTA Rider Alerts via both text and email,” MMVTA states on its website. “MMVTA Riders Alerts will be sent throughout the entire service period that is under the Winter Weather Service Delivery Plan ensuring customers are informed of the latest impacts to service.”
The MMVTA provides guidelines on how each route is affected depending on the level of snow impacting the region. Their specific guidelines can be found on their website at https://mmvta. com/.
MMVTA also recommends signing up for rider alerts at https://mmvta.rideralerts. com/InfoPoint Pittsburgh Regional Transit, which provides transit services for municipalities in Allegheny County like West Mifflin, McKeesport and Elizabeth, doesn’t have specific winter weather guidelines but provides updates on its website at https://www. rideprt.org/.
PRT also has a TrueTime feature, which helps riders track their buses and when they’re expected to arrive at their stop. The PRT website also provides information on detours that might take place on any day.
Transit authorities typically recommend that riders plan ahead during inclement weather and dress warmly. It’s also recommended that riders wait in the designated waiting area of a bus stop and step back in case a vehicle slides on slick roads.

Currently, the MMVTA is also conducting a systemwide study of its fixed-route bus system and is accepting community input through a survey. The survey can be completed online at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/ MidMonMoves.
