Elementary student dies after being hit by car in West Mifflin

Terrel “TJ” Byars Jr., 13, was a sixth-grade student at Logan Elementary.

A 13-year-old East Allegheny School District student died after being hit by a car Saturday in West Mifflin.

Terrel “TJ” Byars Jr., of Wilmerding, was hit in front of Speedway at 4315 Kennywood Blvd. shortly after 5 p.m.

No information about the incident was immediately available from West Mifflin police.

Byars was a sixth-grade student at East Allegheny’s Logan Elementary School in North Versailles, according to a statement from the school district.

“Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates and teachers during this difficult time,” the district’s statement said.

The district said it will support the community as it works to comprehend the loss.

Counselors from Turtle Creek Valley Community Service will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Logan Elementary for grief support. More counseling services will be available when school resumes on Jan. 5.

“Counseling and support services are available, and additional supports will be in place when students return,” the district said. “We ask that our community keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy as we support one another.”
