Don’t forget to support your fire department

THEY PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE.

They save hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property from being destroyed every year.

They’re ready to help day or night, around the clock, 365 days a year.

Just this week we saw McKeesport firefighters rescue a cat from a tree, Monessen firefighters holding a stuff-the-fire-truck event to collect donations for local kids to have a bright Christmas morning, and countless other incidents involving fire-related and traffic incidents that required the help of local firefighters.

Some residents may not be aware of the vital role the fire department plays in the community and the work it takes to keep them running and functional.

Firefighters are always sharpening their skills, participating in drills, training and earning certifications by taking lifesaving courses.

Many firefighters also first aid and emergency care training and become emergency medical technicians (EMTs), as they are often the first ones on the scene of a vehicle crash, fire or other emergency that requires them to render medical aid.

During this holiday season of giving, we encourage residents to support their local fire department with a donation, support fundraisers and fire department bingos, or give a firefighter a simple thank you for a job well done.

Another way to show your support is to practice the safety messages that fire departments try so hard to promote: Make sure your smoke alarms are in good working order; teach your children how to report a fire; don’t try to fight a fire yourself; and make sure your family knows the quickest, safest ways to escape from every room in the house.

It’s also a good time to remember to make sure your home is safe during the holidays by making sure Christmas trees, candles and decorations are not placed too close to heat sources.

There is still plenty of time this month to get out and support your local fire department. Several Mon Valley fire departments will be escorting Santa around Valley communities this week, passing out treats to local kids and spreading holiday cheer. Let’s show them how much they are appreciated this Christmas and throughout the year.
