Belle Vernon Area School District officials and police are investigating threats reported over the weekend that were directed at Rostraver Elementary School.
According to a statement posted on its social media accounts, the district received multiple reports through the Safe2Say Something platform about threats made regarding Rostraver Elementary.
“Please be assured that the district takes all reports of this nature very seriously,” Superintendent Dr. Timothy Glasspool wrote. “The Rostraver Township Police Department is actively investigating all information that has been provided. We are grateful for their continued partnership and for the diligent work they are doing to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and school community.”
There will be an increased police presence at Rostraver Elementary School today to provide “reassurance and support while the investigation continues and to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all.”
The district emphasized that families should let their children know to say something to district officials if they hear or see anything concerning.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate the cooperation of our students, families, and staff,” Glasspool added. “We encourage parents to review their child’s online presence and use of social media applications. Open communication, supervision, and education help children build healthy and responsible digital habits.”
This investigation comes less than a week after the district announced that it was investigating another Safe2Say report. That report involved a statement allegedly made by a middle school student while riding home on a school bus.
According to a statement from the district, the middle school student said he was going to bring a gun to school on Dec. 9.
“Late last night, the PA State Police responded to the student’s residence and spoke with the family regarding the threat and are actively investigating this matter in conjunction with the Rostraver Township Police Department,” the district said last Tuesday. “At this time, law enforcement has not identified any ongoing danger to our students or staff. As a reminder, all middle school students pass through metal detectors each day upon arrival as part of our district’s layered security measures.”
The district encourages any families with any concerns to contact their school office. Information can be found on the district’s social media or at www.bvasd.net.
