Roscoe American Legion hosts annual Mon Valley Veterans Day parade
Tom Rebar, left, of Roscoe, drove his 1955 Chevy in the parade to escort his dad, Vietnam veteran and retired U.S. Marine Robert Rebar. The car had a photo of Robert Rebar’s uncle, 2nd Lt. Donald W. Sheppick of Roscoe, who was only 26 on March 11, 1944, when he boarded a World War II B-24 bomber nicknamed “Heaven Can Wait” that came under anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the waters off Papua, New Guinea, killing all 11 crew members onboard. Sheppick’s remains were recently returned home and a proper military burial was held Sept. 25 at Howe Cemetery in Long Branch.
Vietnam veterans pass by during Saturday’s Mon Valley Veterans Day Parade. For the first time in its storied history, the parade marched under the leadership of Roscoe’s American Legion Post 801. The parade and opening ceremony began in Stockdale and finished in Elco. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Dave Papak served as parade emcee.
