MVAA withdraws from National Memorial Day Parade invitation
Organizers cited financial concerns and the current national climate as reasons for canceling the trip.
Despite earning a prestigious invitation to perform in the 2026 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) has turned it down — citing cost and safety concerns.
The nonprofit arts organization announced Friday that its Regimental Fife & Drum Unit will not participate in the nationally televised event, coordinated by Music Celebrations International. The decision, MVAA said, was made after careful review of travel expenses, logistical demands and the broader political climate.
“After careful review, MVAA leadership determined that the financial burden associated with travel, lodging, transportation, and related expenses — combined with concerns related to the current national climate — makes participation neither feasible nor in the best interest of the students and families the organization serves,” MVAA said in an official statement.
Board members called the move heartbreaking but necessary.
“This was a painful, heartrending decision, not made lightly,” the statement continued. “The MVAA Board of Directors sincerely wanted our students to participate, and every option was explored. In the end, the board was required to face reality and make the responsible — though deeply disappointing — choice to withdraw.”
MVAA President Annette Buffer said the decision does not reflect on the students, who earned the opportunity through hard work and dedication.
“We are incredibly proud of every member of the Regimental Fife & Drum Unit,” Buffer said. “Their talent, discipline, and commitment represent the very best of our mission. This decision was not a reflection on them in any way, but rather a recognition of financial and environmental factors beyond their control. Our obligation will always be to protect both our students and the long-term health of our organization.”
MVAA Founder and CEO Mark Smith said supporters who donated to help fund the trip will be reimbursed in full.
“All donations received specifically for this effort will be returned in full to their original donors,” Smith said. “We remain fully committed to the future of the Regimental Fife & Drum Unit, and we will continue investing in performance opportunities that are financially responsible and mission-aligned. This ensemble is an important part of who we are — and it will continue to thrive.”
MVAA emphasized that the parade withdrawal does not signal a step back in programming. The organization continues to expand its lineup of student and community ensembles, including the Twin Coaches Jr. Stage Band, VoiceZ on Fire Show Choir, Sam Bill Legacy Band, Take 5 Brass, Mon Valley Community Choir and the Mon Valley Legends Marching Unit — an intergenerational group open to all ages.
The Regimental Fife & Drum Unit remains active and will continue to perform at regional events, with MVAA exploring future opportunities that align with its mission and resources.
