Arrest made in stabbing at game

By SARAH PELLIS spellis@yourmvi.com

Classes are canceled today in Ringgold School District, but counselors will be made available.

One person was stabbed Sunday afternoon at a youth football game in Carroll Township.

The Washington County District Attorney confirmed to our news partners at WTAE that 17-year-old Daron Carpenter was arrested and is being charged as an adult.

First responders were called to Joe Montana Stadium around 1:35 p.m. for a report of a teen who suffered a stab wound to the abdomen.

The victim was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital, and a condition report wasn’t available Sunday night.

A witness told WTAE that the incident took place during halftime and appeared to involve three attackers.

A release from Ringgold Superintendent Randall Skrinjorich stated that the district is cooperating with the Ringgold Police Department as well as local law enforcement.

“Our thoughts are with all who have been affected,” Skrinjorich said in the statement. “We are committed to ensuring that our community is safe within our schools and will continue to collaborate with officials during this active investigation.”

Skrinjorich also thanked Ringgold police officials and local agencies for their swift response and continued partnership.

No school today

Skrinjorich announced later Sunday evening that, because of the ongoing investigation, all schools will be closed Monday.

There will be no formal classes, but school buildings will remain open and the previously announced counseling services will be available for students.

“We understand that this decision may cause an inconvenience for some of our families, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility,” Skrinjorich said in a second letter to the community. “After careful consideration, we believe this is the least disruptive and most supportive option for our students and staff at this time.”

Following the incident, the Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League issued a statement that said it is unable to provide full details because of an active investigation.

“We wanted to ensure everyone that this did not involve any WPYFL or affiliated parties,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals involved.”

According to the release, counseling and support services are available for any students or staff in need. Ringgold administration can be contacted at 724-2589329.
