Boaters who want to keep the Youghiogheny River clean of discarded tires and other trash from Cedar Creek Park in Rostraver to West Newton can paddle down the river on Saturday and join in removing the unsightly mess.

The Mountain Watershed Association, an environmental organization based in Melcroft, is sponsoring the event. Those interested can meet the group at the West Newton ballfield along Goehring Pond Road at 8:30 a.m.. The group will shuttle to the put-in site at Cedar Creek Park off Route 51 in Rostraver.

Mountain Watershed will provide trash bags and gloves. Participants can bring snacks, sunscreen, drinking water and a waterproof bag to protect items from getting wet.

The organization estimates it will take about two hours to reach West Newton.

Those with their own boat can leave it at Cedar Creek Park, then drive to meet the group at West Newton to check in and use the free shuttle.

Following the cleanup, those age 21 and older can join the Mountain Watershed staff at Bloom Brew, 123 N. Water St., West Newton, for a free drink.
