NFL will appeal Gruden ruling

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The NFL will appeal the Nevada Supreme Court’s ruling Monday that former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden can proceed with his lawsuit and not go through the league for arbitration.

The league will request a rehearing from the same court that overturned a prior Nevada Supreme Court panel ruling in May 2024 that the matter could go to arbitration. But in October, Gruden was granted a hearing by the full court.

Gruden filed a lawsuit in 2021 against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging a “malicious and orchestrated campaign” to destroy his career by leaking old emails he sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments that pressured the Raiders to fire him.

“I’m looking forward to having the truth come out and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Gruden said in a statement to ESPN.

Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later.

In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada’s high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden’s claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell.

The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that “the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.”

Texans’ Jordan suffers another season-ending injury HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans tight end Brevin Jordan was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, marking the second straight year he’s sustained a season-ending injury.

The team didn’t specify his injury, but he appeared to injure his lower leg or knee in training camp Monday. This injury comes after he tore an ACL in Week 2 last season.

“He went down with a devastating injury,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “It’s really rough for a guy that just bounced back from a major injury. So, it’s tough on Brevin right now and tough on our entire team.”

Jordan was a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft. He appeared in 14 games in 2023 when he had a career-high 219 yards receiving with two touchdowns. For his career he has 53 receptions for 532 yards and five touchdowns.

Nabers sits with toe injury FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Malik Nabers did not participate in the New York Giants’ first of two joint practices against the Jets on Tuesday, and coach Brian Daboll was not forthcoming about details surrounding the top wide receiver’s status.

Nabers has been dealing with a toe injury that caused him to miss spring workouts, though Daboll at the time called it “nothing serious.” The 22-yearold continues to manage it in training camp, sitting out the end of 11-on-11 drills at practice last week, not taking part in an ensuing pregame walkthrough practice and not playing in the exhibition opener at Buffalo last weekend.

Daboll has been tight-lipped about injuries since camp began last month, and that continued with questions about whether Nabers was out because of the toe ailment and if he was concerned.

“I’m not going to get into injuries,” Daboll said. “He’s rehabbing, and he’s doing everything he can do to get back.”

Bills’ Cook resumes practicing ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills running back James Cook resumed practicing on Tuesday, ending — temporarily, at least — his “hold-in” as part of a contract standoff.

Cook took the field in uniform and participated throughout practice, including team drills, after missing four straight sessions last week — the last two in which the fourth-year player failed to even make an appearance on the sideline. Cook declined to speak to reporters afterward about his decision to return to practice while still in the midst of seeking to secure a contract extension on the final year of his rookie deal.

Coach Sean McDermott anticipated Cook’s return based on conversations he had with the running back.

“Things have changed and yes, I’ve had a conversation with James, and the information we’re getting is he is moving in the right direction,” McDermott said.
