SS McKeesport remembered at ceremony

The cargo ship was in service for 24 years before being sunk by the Germans in World War II.

Tuesday was a significant day, as always, in the McKeesport area.

Each year on April 29, veterans, dignitaries and community residents gather at McKees Point, the Marina or the Palisades near the Youghiogheny River to remember the SS McKeesport — a proud little cargo ship that served its country from 1919 to 1943 before falling victim to a torpedo and finally gunshots that sent her to her grave.
