BVA, EF girls pick up wins; Bearcats continue to roll

By JEREMY SELLEW

Bishop Canevin 5, Serra Catholic 2

The Belle Vernon Area girls soccer team kept a firm grip on a playoff spot as the second half of the section slate began Monday.

Kelsey Roskovich assisted on both Leopard goals as Belle Vernon shut out host Steel Valley, 2-0, in Section 1-2A action.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards struck twice in the final 40 minutes.

Payton Walsh scored the opening tally for Belle Vernon (6-6, 5-2) and Abby Russell added the insurance goal.

“Once we settled down in the second half and maintained better possession, we really ramped up our offensive opportunities,” BVA head coach Tracy Lovett said.

The Leopards had 28 shots at the goal compared to only eight for the Ironmen (4-5, 3-4).

Lovett praised her team’s defensive effort against a speedy Ironmen’s team that had won three out of their last four coming into the match.

“Sammy Mincone really stood out on defense, but that whole line of Saylor Lee, Willa Zarichnak, Mincone and our keepers played solid,” Lovett said. “I thought Kelsey, Jordyn McDowell and Abby had great games in the midfield.”

Rory Bastedo and Skylar Salay combined for seven saves in the win.

The Leopards will host first-place South Park Wednesday at James Weir Stadium.

The Eagles (0-7, 0-6) remained winless on the season with a Section 3-1A loss at The Nest to the Crusaders.

Bella Dumbroski and Milena Poziviak scored goals for Serra Catholic.

Haley Genes was peppered by Bishop Canevin (3-6, 3-4) in the net as she had to make 29 saves for the Eagles.

Serra is back in action Wednesday at Aquinas Academy at 3:45 p.m.

South Park 10, Charleroi 1

The first-place Eagles rolled over the winless Cougars (0-8, 0-7) in a Section 2-1A match in South Park (7-4, 7-0).

Rhianna Grogan scored the lone goal for Charleroi in the loss.

Taylor Vargo led South Park with four goals and Brooke Paylo had a hat trick. Addison Kerr, Ella Voyten and Reese Recker also scored for the Eagles.

Charleroi is back in action Wednesday at home against neighbor Ringgold.

Elizabeth Forward 1, West Mifflin 0

Brooklyn Baldensperger scored in the second half to give the Warriors (2-5, 2-4) a close win over the Titans (1-7-1, 0-6-1).

With the loss, West Mifflin’s winless streak reached seven games.

Maicee Smith got the assist on Baldensperger’s goal. Adysson Davis finished with six saves for Elizabeth Forward.

Hayden Mroz had nine saves for West Mifflin. The Warriors host Plum Wednesday.

Keystone Oaks 3, Ringgold 1

Miranda Santina scored in the second half for the Rams’ only goal in a Section 1-2A loss at home to the Golden Eagles (7-5, 5-2).

Ringgold travels to Charleroi Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kick.

Boys Bentworth 8, Yough 0

Ryan Moessner had a hat trick – twice – as the Bearcats rolled over visiting Yough (1-4-2) in a non-section game up on the hill in Ellsworth.

Adam Moessner added a pair of goals for the Bearcats (10-0).

Each Moessner, Andrew Vipperman, Aiden McMurray, Austin Hollier, Dillan Colbert and Billy Moyer each had assists for Bentworth.

The Bearcats travel to rival Greensburg Central Catholic Thursday to kick off the second half of section play.

Volleyball California 3, Avella 0

After two close sets, the Trojans rolled to a 25-4 win in the third to pick up a sweep over host Avella Monday in non-section volleyball play.

Ava Bojtos and Addison Gregory each had 14 assists for the Trojans (6-2) as Sydney Dunn (7) and Mady Morton (6) combined for 13 kills.

The Trojans jost Trinity Christian Thursday for a section contest.

Serra Catholic 3, South Allegheny 1

The Eagles picked up a 3-1 win over the visiting Gladiators in non-section play Monday.

Game scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19.

No other statistics were reported for either team.

Serra Catholic (6-2) hosts Greensburg Central Catholic today while the Gladiators (9-3) host East Allegheny.

Ringgold 3, Charleroi 1 The Rams (7-2) won by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-27 and 25-19 in a win over neighboring rival Charleroi (6-4) in non-section play Monday.
