Metzger’s goal leads BVA Middle School boys

Gavin Metzger scored the lone goal in the first half to lead the Belle Vernon Area Middle School boys soccer team to a 1-0 win over Laurel Highlands Monday.

Jordan Jerome made six saves in the net to preserve the shutout win for BVA.

The Leps (5-0-1) are back in action Wednesday at home against Southmoreland.

BVA MS girls score late to beat Hempfield

Bella Wolfe and Ali Watson scored in the second half to lead the BVA Middle School girls soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Hempfield Monday at James Weir Stadium.

Lily Espejo was credited with an assist on Wolfe’s goal for the Leps (5-0-1). Isis Almyty and Ava Jones combined in goal for the shutout.

BVA travels to Laurel Highlands Thursday.

AAC looks to add Air Force to Navy, Army’s conference

The American Athletic Conference has ramped up interest in adding Air Force as a member to put all three service academies into the same league for the first time, a person with knowledge of the AAC’s discussions told The Associated Press on Monday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because conference officials were not making their internal discussions public.

ESPN first reported the American was targeting Air Force, a charter member of the Mountain West, which is now the next conference in danger of being picked apart in another wave of realignment.

In a statement, the AAC declined to address possible expansion.

“In the past five months we have prioritized seizing every opportunity that enhances value for our member institutions and student-athletes,” the league said. “Whether through private capital, naming rights, innovative partnerships or realignment, we have proactively assessed each opportunity, and are prepared to collaboratively take action-steps to be at the forefront of success and sustainability.”

Badgers QB to miss rest of season with torn ACL

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the remainder of the season, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because Wisconsin hasn’t announced the severity of the injury. Van Dyke hurt his right knee during Wisconsin’s 42-10 loss to No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.

The Wisconsin State Journal first reported that Van Dyke would miss the rest of the season. ESPN first reported that Van Dyke had a torn ACL.
