Local golfers qualify for WPIAL 2A Individual Championships

A number of local golfers out of Section 8-2A will take part in the WPIAL Class 2A Championships first round Monday at Youghigheny Country Club.

The sectional tournament was held Monday at The Madison Club.

Four members of the Elizabeth Forward golf team will represent the Warriors, led by Aaron Didjunas. Didjunas shot a 35 on the front nine and 35 on the back to finished with a 70 to lead the local contingent.

Didjunas’ teammate Luke Boyer shot a 73 and Mitchell Vuick shot a 77. Rounding out the Warriors’ group will be Julien Hredocik, who shot an 80. The qualifying score to hit was 82.

Freshman Levi Large, Gage Patterson and Jake Corrin will represent the Charleroi Cougars after Large shot a 35 and 38 to end up with a 70. Patterson shot a 39 on the front and finished strong on the back nine with a 37 to end his day at 76. Corrin carded a 78 (37-41) to beat the qualifying mark.

The final local qualifier was Frazier’s Aidan Hardy. Hardy hit a 37 on the front and closed his round with a 38 on the back to finish with a 75.

Those who qualify out of the first round will travel to Sewickley Height Golf Club for the final round Oct. 2.

Soccer Girls Belle Vernon 7, Charleroi 0

It was all Leopards in an all-Mon Valley matchup Monday night.

Payton Walsh and Grace West managed two goals each while Ava Scalise, Emma Nicklow and Sammy Mincone also scored for Belle Vernon (5-5, 4-2).

Abby Russell tallied two assists while West, Kelsey Roskovich, Chessa Mertz and Saylor Lee also had assists.

“The team really stepped up in the second half,” Belle Vernon coach Tracy Lovett said. “They had the ball in Charleroi’s end the whole half.”

The Leopards managed five of their goals in the final half of play.

Up next for Charleroi (0-6, 0-5) is a match at Steel Valley Wednesday. For Belle Vernon, they’ll return Thursday against Hempfield.

Records: Belle Vernon (5-5, 4-2); Charleroi (0-6, 0-5).

Franklin Regional 2, Elizabeth Forward 1

Franklin Regional just edged out Elizabeth Forward in a close section match.

Maicee Smith scored for the Warriors (2-3, 2-3) but Reilly Weaver scored twice for FR (5-4, 4-1) in the win Adysson Davis made 14 saves in goal for the Warriors.

Up next for EF is a Section 4-3A clash at Bethel Park Wednesday.

Bentworth 3, Beth-Center 0

Bentworth picked up an easy Section 2-1A win Monday night as Bella Moyer assisted all three goals.

The Bearcats (6-0, 3-0) had goals from Brielle Dillon, Brina Orsatti and Megan Keturakis in the win as Nita Anderson and Julia Brandau combined for the clean sheet.

“It was a good performance from the girls tonight,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “They competed well and ultimately did what they needed to get the 3-point result.

“Makayla and Alex Jackson were both critical in the midfield. They really did a good job of shielding our back line and allowing our attackers to get forward.”

Bentworth will play again at Chartiers- Houston Wednesday.

Greensburg Salem 4, West Mifflin 2

No game or scoring information reported.

Volleyball South Allegheny 3, Elizabeth Forward 2

South Allegheny won the first set, went down 2-1, and then won two straight to complete a comeback victory over their neighbors.

Ally Chizmar and Regan McBeth each had nine kills for the Gladiators. Sets finished 2521, 23-25, 17-25, 25-15, 15-8 in favor of SA.

Ringgold 3, Ambridge 0

Ringgold swept Ambridge by scores of 2513, 25-13, and 25-7. The Rams moved to 6-1 with the victory.
