Charleroi baby shower to focus on helping Haitian immigrants

By TAYLOR BROWN, Senior Reporter

The free community event will take place Tuesday in Chamber Plaza.

A community baby shower will be held Tuesday in Charleroi to help new parents in need.

Beverly’s PGH, a nonprofit committed to supporting families through celebration and essential resources, is sponsoring the event.

It will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 303 Chamber Plaza.

The free event has been designed for the Haitian refugee community to provide maternal and infant care support.

The organization wanted to find a way to help because the borough has “recently seen an influx of Haitian refugees seeking employment in local factories, many of whom face significant barriers to accessing health care, including language and transportation challenges.”

To address the need, Beverly’s Babies — a division of Beverly’s PGH — partnered with Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services to host the event at its Charleroi location.

There will be Haitian/Creole interpreters on site to assist families.

The new Babies in the Burgh Mobile Unit will also be at the event to offer free infant formula, lactation support and essential baby care items.

“This event is an opportunity for families to gather valuable resources and celebrate their new arrivals,” said Emma Myers, Beverly’s Babies program manager.

In partnership with Allegheny Health Network’s Women’s Institute, the event will feature educational sessions on infant car seat safety, as supported by Range Resources.

Mildred Duvet, MD, OB/ GYN at AHN Jefferson Hospital, said it’s been a valuable partnership.

“It is an honor and privilege to welcome and care for these patients alongside Beverly’s PGH,” she said. “My family is from Haiti, and I understand the unique challenges these patients face coming to a new country and trying to navigate the U.S. health care system.

“My partners at AHN Jefferson Hospital and the AHN Women’s Institute are deeply committed to working with this population to better understand and address their needs so that we can provide compassionate, high-quality obstetric and gynecologic care.

“Ultimately, we hope to meet moms, birthing people and their families right where they are and empower them to navigate their health and wellness journeys with the best community partners, resources and clinicians by their side.”

Families can register by texting “Baby Shower” to 844-511-1544.
