Leps stun Golden Eagles; Warriors get first win

An injury-depleted Belle Vernon squad traveled to Keystone Oaks and dealt the Golden Eagles (5-4, 3-1) their first section loss of the season, knocking them out of a tie for first place in the process.

Ava Scalise returned from injury and scored the opening goal for the Leopards (4-4, 3-2). In the second half, freshman Jordyn McDowell added a key insurance goal to secure the win.

Kelsey Roskovich and Chessa Mertz added assists on the Leopard goals.

“We had a couple players out due to illness and others playing sick, but everyone who stepped on the field tonight dug deep and really contributed,” Belle Vernon head coach Tracy Lovett said. “That was a total team effort and win.”

Skylar Salay got the win in net for the Leopards, making eight saves.

Belle Vernon, who has won two out their last three games, returns to play Saturday at home against rival Yough in non-section play.

Elizabeth Forward 2, Greensburg Salem 0 Maicee Smith and Mia Valerio scored first-half goals for the Warriors (1-3, 1-3) as they picked up a clean-sheet win over the visiting Golden Lions (2-4, 0-4) Wednesday.

Taylor Snyder added an assist for EF as keeper Adysson Davis made two saves in the win.

The Golden Lions’ Alice Wilkinson had four saves in the losing effort.

The Warriors travel to Charleroi Saturday at 10 a.m. for a non-section game.

South Park 7, Ringgold 0 The Ringgold girls saw their losing streak hit three games as they were shut out on the road at South Park in a Section 1-2A contest.

Arianna Beck and Reese Recker each finished with a brace (two goals) to lead the offense. With the win, the Eagles moved to 4-0 in section play.

Additional goals for South Park (4-3, 4-0) were scored by Alicia Riberich, Addison Kerr and Ella Voyten.

Ringgold (2-4, 1-4) trailed 3-0 at halftime.

The Rams will look to get back on track Wednesday at home against McGuffey.

West Mifflin 1, Indiana 1 (2 OT)

The Titans (1-4-1, 0-3-1) and Indians (2-4-1, 2-1-1) played to a draw after 100 minutes of soccer Wednesday.

The tie snapped a three-game losing streak for West Mifflin.

The Titans are back in action Monday on the road at Greensburg Salem for a Section 4-3A contest.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 1

Aislin Majoris netted a hat trick and four other Jaguars found the back of the net as TJ rolled over Uniontown.

Denika Bergman, Aubrey Little, Olivia Della Lucia and Savannah Baker each added markers for Thomas Jefferson (4-1, 3-0).

The Jaguars head to Peters Township Saturday afternoon for non-section play.

Golf Boys Charleroi 200, Frazier 226

The Cougars picked up a Section 8-2A win over the Commodores at Mon Valley Country Club.

Jake Corrin took medalist honors with a 1-over par 37 to lead the Cougars (10-3, 9-2). Gage Patterson added a 39 and Kaden Woods and Jackson Keranko each carded a 41.

The Commodores were led by Eli Cernuska’s 40. Dylan Keilbach added a 41.

Both teams are back on the course Friday with Charleroi traveling to Elizabeth Forward and Frazier hosting Shady Side Academy in section matches.

Ringgold 208, McKeesport 235

Evan Callaway was the medalist as the Rams picked up a Section 2-3A win over the Tigers at Rolling Green.

Brice Kowall added a 37 and Trevor Benson shot a 42 for the Rams.

McKeesport was led by Kaleb Smith’s 40. Jayden Cottem shot a 42 and Brock Stevenson carded a 44.

Ringgold travels to Laurel Highlands Friday. McKeesport is back on the course against the Mustangs on Tuesday.

Seton LaSalle 214, Yough 234

The Cougars dropped a Section 8-2A match at the Madison Club to the visiting Rebels Wednesday.

John Dolan shot a 34 and Regis Manion added a 39 for Seton La-Salle.

Leading the way for the Cougars (2-11, 1-9) was Landon O’Donnell with a 41. Anthony Bonari added a 43.

The Cougars head to the Westmoreland County Coaches Association tournament today at the Latrobe Elks Course.

South Park 225, South Allegheny 231

Josh Nesky added another medalist honor to his season haul with a 37, but the Gladiators dropped a Section 7-2A match on the road to the Eagles.

Noah Cortes (44) and Mason Jobes (49) each broke 50 for South Allegheny.

Ryan Spitznagel shot a 43 to lead a consistent Eagles squad. Keegan Fekety and Luke Miles each shot 44s. The other two golfers in the lineup shot 47s.

The Gladiators host Serra Catholic Tuesday.

Bentworth 218, Brownsville 284

The Bearcats picked up a section win at home against the visiting Falcons in a Section 3-2A match.

Blake Reed led the way for Bentworth, shooting a 4-over 39 at Chippewa.

Ross Skerbetz added a 41 and Sam Wade shot a 44.

Benjamin Vojacek led the Falcons with a 43. Ava Rohland chipped in a 47.

The Bearcats host Beth-Center today.

Cross country

The McKeesport boys picked up a win in a meet Tuesday with Albert Gallatin, Uniontown and Connellsville at Penn State Fayette.

The Tigers beat AG, 15-50, and were beaten by Uniontown (15-46) and Connellsville (25-30).

The McKeesport girls were swept 15-50 by the Colonials, Red Raiders and Falcons.

Top 10 finishers for the Tiger boys were Kyin Jeter (seventh) and Robert Jones (ninth). In the girls’ race, Salynah Francis was ninth overall.

The Tigers are back at it Tuesday at Ringgold along with Laurel Highlands and West Mifflin.

Volleyball Laurel Highlands 3, Belle Vernon 0 (Tues.)

The Fillies (4-0, 2-0) swept the Leopards in Section 3-3A play Tuesday on Belle Vernon’s home floor.

Game scores were 25-18, 26-24 and 25-19 in favor of LH.

Taylor McDaniel led the Leopards with six kills offensively and seven aces from the service line. Abbey Nichols had 15 assists and Joy Johnson led the defense with 10 digs.

The Leopards are back in action Monday at home against Frazier.

South Allegheny 3, Brentwood 0

The Gladiators won a non-section match against the Spartans Wednesday.

No scores or stats were reported.
