Monessen outing still looking for golfers, sponsors
The annual Corley, Miller, Bergstedt outing will be held Sept. 14 at Chippewa Golf Club.
The annual Major Corley, Delvin Miller, Danny Bergstedt Memorial Golf Outing will be held Sept. 14 at Chippewa Golf Club in Bentleyville.
The event serves as a fundraiser for all athletic programs at Monessen High School.
Last year, under a revised format for use of the funds, the event raised more than $15,000 for Monessen’s 10 athletic teams to share and for a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior.
CMB Memorial Committee chairman John Swann said while the tournament was started solely for athletics, the committee wanted to do something to try and involve the entire student body.
“Last year we gave a $500 scholarship for a senior, and that senior did not have to be involved in sports,” Swann said. “We also made a $1,000 donation to the family of Mason Madzey.”
Madzey is a student who is suffering from rare form of brain cancer. His father, D.J., is a teacher for the district.
“In Monessen, we are all Greyhounds,” Swann said. “Whether you play sports or not, we care about all of our kids.”
The event is named after Corley, the school’s all-time winningest girls basketball coach who won three WPIAL titles and one PIAA title in a 25-year career; Miller, a standout three-sport athlete in the 1970s who played football at Kansas and then came back to coach football for the Greyhounds; and Bergstedt, a former standout baseball player at Monessen who went on to play at California University and later coached baseball at the school and was a lifelong passionate fan of the school’s teams until his passing.
“All three are still dearly missed and the annual golf tournament is a way to keep their memories alive and to help the students,” Swann said. “It’s a great undertaking, but very rewarding.”
Swann said there are still openings for golfers, as well as sponsors for the day.
“We’re getting close to the end, but we can use more golfers and we can always use more sponsors as well. We just need to hear from anyone interested as soon as possible.”
The event is a four-man scramble that will feature a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $100 per player and includes golf, cart, lunch, dinner and various skill and award prizes.
Hole and tee sponsors are $50 each, and Swann added that the committee is still accepting any donations of gift baskets for an auction or cash or gift cards to be added to the prizes to be awarded.
