BVA golfers still unbeaten; Frazier VB wins thriller

The Belle Vernon Area boys golf team continues to pile up the wins and burn the fairways and greens at courses around the region.

The Leopards maintained their lead in Section 2-3A after picking up a 178-200 win over visiting Laurel Highlands on the front nine of the Red Course at Cedarbrook.

Belle Vernon didn’t have a golfer shoot higher than 3-over par as they rolled by 22 strokes.

Jordan Mocello led the way for the Leps (11-0, 8-0) with a 2-under 33. Seth Tomalski was 1-under with a 34 and Donny Croftcheck shot even-par with a 35 for BVA.

Landon Vaccaro and Jack Edwards each shot 3-over 38.

Jacob Kalich led the Mustangs, matching Mocello with a 2-under 33. Tyler Cook ended with a 40 and two other Mustangs finished with 42s.

The Leopards are back on the course Monday at Pleasant Valley against Connellsville in section play.

Charleroi 212, Seton LaSalle 229

The Cougars knocked off the Rebels in a Section 8-2A match at Mon Valley Country Club.

Levi Large led the way for the Cougars, shooting 2-over par 38. Josh Chambers, Jake Corrin and Gage Patterson each shot a 43.

John Dolan led the Rebels by carding a 38.

Charleroi travels to Geibel Monday.

Uniontown 212, Ringgold 240

The Red Raiders dropped the Rams in a Section 2-3A match at Uniontown Country Club Thursday.

Trevor Uphold and Brody Shifbaur led the Red Raiders with a 39 and 40.

Looking best for the Rams were Brice Kowall with a 44 and Evan Callaway with a 45.

The Rams host McKeesport Wednesday at Rolling Green.

Bishop Canevin 207, South Allegheny 243

Josh Nesky claimed medalist honors by carding a 33 for the Gladiators, but the Crusaders came out with the Section 7-2A win at Chartiers Country Club.

Jamin Brock led Bishop Canevin with a 36 and teammate Tyler Heinrich added a 40.

The Gladiators host Steel Valley Monday.

Elizabeth Forward 187, Geibel 223

Aaron Didjunas fired a 31 and Gavin Madded added a 38 to lead the Warriors (8-1, 8-1) to a Section 8-2A win over the Gators.

The Warriors travel to Frazier Monday for another section contest.

Girls Elizabeth Forward 183, Norwin 206

The Warriors remained unbeaten overall with a Section 3-3A win over Norwin Thursday.

Mya Morgan sunk four birdies on her way to a 35 to lead the Warriors (9-0, 7-0).

Teammates Sydney Boyd and Alizabeth Leezer finished with a 48 and 49. Annalise Didjunas added a 51.

Adalena Robb shot a 44 to lead the Knights (3-8, 3-5).

The Warriors host Gateway today.

Soccer Boys Aquinas Academy 4, Serra Catholic 0 Nate Loughner was under fire in goal for the Eagles and ended up making 10 saves, but it wasn’t enough as Serra Catholic (0-6, 0-1) dropped their Section 3-1A opener to Aquinas Academy (3-0, 1-0).

The Eagles are back in section play Tuesday at home against Bishop Canevin.

Thomas Jefferson 2, Albert Gallatin 0

Despite playing a man down for 70 minutes, the Jaguars (3-0-1, 2-01) picked up a Section 2-3A win on the road.

Jake Shoemaker had a goal and assist and Brayden Miller had the other goal for Thomas Jefferson.

Penn-Trafford 3, West Mifflin 0

The Titans remained winless on the season as the Warriors picked up a pair of insurance goals in the second half to break open a close Section 3-3A contest.

Goal scorers for the Warriors were not reported.

The Titans are back in section play Tuesday at Latrobe.

Elizabeth Forward 4, McGuffey 0

Luca Valerio scored twice and added an assist, and Dom Cavalier and Aidan Davis each scored a goal and assist as the Warriors (2-2-1, 2-0-1) picked up a Section 3-2A win on the Highlanders’ home field.

Matt Johnston earned the shutout in goal for Elizabeth Forward.

EF heads to East Allegheny Tuesday for a section matchup.

Ringgold 0, Trinity 0 The Rams (3-0-1, 2-0-1) and Hillers (2-1-2, 2-0-1) battled to a scoreless draw after losing an official due to injury.

With the game tied at the end of 80 minutes, the game was abandoned as a draw.

Ringgold travels to McKeesport for a section contest Tuesday.

In other soccer action: McKeesport was downed by Bethel Park, 11-1; Ligonier Valley shut out South Allegheny, 3-0; Mt. Pleasant dealt Yough a 2-0 loss; Chartiers-Houston shut out California, 4-0. No game information was reported on these games.

Volleyball Frazier 3, Greensburg C.C. 2

The Commodores won a thriller with a reverse sweep on the Centurions’ floor Thursday.

Game scores were 19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 15-12.

Allie Monack (14) and Grace Vaughn (10) combined for 24 kills while teammate Gracen Hartman dished out 40 assists.

Addison Hiles and Jayanna Ciferno finished with 16 and 12 digs, while Addison Schultz (10) and Vaughn (14) had 24 service points. Schultz added three blocks in the middle.

The Commodores host Southmoreland Monday for a non-section match.

California 3, Trinity Christian 0

Addison Gregory (14) and Ava Bojtos (9) handed out 23 assists as the Trojans (4-0, 1-0) earned a Section 2-1A win in a matinee at Trinity Christian.

Game scores were tight with the Trojans winning 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21.

Sydney Dunn led the offense with 7 kills and Hannah Hull carried the defense with 8 digs.

The Trojans host Greensburg Central Catholic Tuesday in a section match.

Derry 3, McKeesport 0 The Trojans picked up a section win over the visiting Tigers. No game scores or statistics were reported.

Ringgold 3, Belle Vernon 0

The Rams easily swept by the Leopards – 25-14, 25-12 and 25-16 – to earned a Section 3-3A win.

South Allegheny 3, Keystone Oaks 1

The Gladiators picked up an important section win over the Golden Eagles. No scores or statistics were reported.

In other scheduled games Thursday: Elizabeth Forward traveled to Laurel Highlands, Thomas Jefferson hosted Albert Gallatin, Charleroi went to McGuffey, Bentworth faced off against Waynesburg and Yough hosted Geibel. No game information was reported for these matchups.
