Oldies concert in Clairton to raise money for local veterans

By JIM BUSCH For the MVI

The all-day concert is set for Sept. 7 at Clairton Park.

An annual oldies concert to raise money to aid local veterans is being planned in Clairton.

The seventh annual oldies concert at the Buzzy Weber Pavilion in Clairton Park is set for Sept. 7. The park gates will open at noon and the concert will begin at 1 p.m. with five acts providing continuous entertainment until 9 p.m.

The concert is being held in conjunction with Clairton American Legion Post 75 and the Clairton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 803.

Proceeds from the show will be used by the VFW and legion to fund a variety of programs aiding local veterans.

Post 75 Commander Bob Haramia and KFB Radio DJ Johnny O will share master of ceremony honors.

The line-up will include Chuck Corby and the Soul Communicators. Corby began his music career at just 8-years-old and has been pleasing crowds for more than six decades. He has shared the stage with some of the greatest acts of the doowop era.

Also on the bill will be local fan favorites, the Pittsburgh Belairs. The Belairs perform doo-wop, oldies and Motown favorites in their signature vocal harmony style. Eddie Holman is best known for his smash hit, “Hey There Lonely Girl,” but he is a multi-talented performer whose work ranges from rhythm and blues, soul and gospel music.

The Pure Gold Band describe themselves as the “Tri-State Area’s No. 1 Show and Dance Band.” They have built a reputation for their beautiful mix of soulful blues to popular contemporary songs.

Filling out the evening’s roster of entertainers is Sam Ferella and the Holidays. The group began when a group of Clairton teenagers got together to form a singing group in the 1950s. The group achieved national success before disbanding in 1962. Since reuniting in 1995, the group has performed to much acclaim throughout the U.S.

Droopy’s Catering will be on hand with a selection of food items. Soft drinks and adult beverages will be available for sale throughout the day. No outside food or coolers will be allowed in the park.

The original concert was the brainchild of Magisterial District Justice Armand Martin Sr. and leaders of the local veterans organizations.

Today, his son Armand Martin Jr. continues in his father’s footsteps. This year’s organizers include Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi, Joe Julian, Guy Benack, and local VFW Commander Scott Waugaman. The concert cochairs are Andy Duboy and Ralph Imbrogno. The committee is very appreciative to the more than 50 local individuals and businesses who donated to making the concert a success. The money raised by the concert will be used to assist local veterans in need providing them with needed medical equipment, holiday meals and other services.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. Concert- goers should bring lawn chairs or blankets and there is plenty of free parking on site. For tickets, call 412-2338113, ext. 3, or contact Andy Duboy at 412-708-3945.
