Annual Hellenic Scholarships awarded

At its annual scholarship picnic, the Monessen Chapter of the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA) No. 116 awarded scholarships to Belle Vernon Area High School graduates Melina Stratigos and Megan Callaway. Melina, daughter of Harry and Becky Stratigos of Belle Vernon, plans to attend Monmouth College. Megan, daughter of Kenny and Beth Callaway, plans to attend Ohio State University. Pictured, from left, are Angelo Loulis, past district governor, Megan, Melina and Cleon Kordistos, past supreme governor. AHEPA is one of the largest Hellenic heritage groups in the world and is a major community service organization in North America. While founded in the United States in 1922, the AHEPA organization has branched out to include chapters throughout Canada, Greece, Cyprus, New Zealand and Australia. The mission of AHEPA is to promote the ancient Hellenic ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
