BV Senior Legion remains unbeaten with sweep

Belle Vernon Legion scored 10 combined runs in the second, third and fourth innings and held off Connellsville, 12-7, to take the first game of a doubleheader and remain unbeaten in Legion ball play.

After Connellsville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Jake Lee RBI single, Belle Vernon answered back with a three spot in the second.

Kole Doppelheuer scored on a passed ball just before Alex Nash reached on a bunt. Connellsville pitcher Ethan Porecca threw it away allowing AJ Grese to score and make it 2-1.

After Porecca walked Mitchell Vuick, Jaxson Bozek laid down a safety squeeze to score Alex Nash making it 3-1.

Porecca was tagged with the loss after last three innings. He was ultimately charged with eight earned runs of the nine he allowed.

Connellsville (4-2) bounced back to tie the game at three in the top half of the third as Lee singled in Matthew Firestone. He came in to score on an error by Belle Vernon third baseman Kaden Faychak on Anthony Piasecki’s ground ball.

Grese gave Belle Vernon the lead right back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single. Doppelheuer scored on a double steal and Grese came in to score on a Nash ground out to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bozek scored on a wild pitch, Charlie Nigut came in to score as well to make it 8-3.

Grese made it 10-3 with a two-run double to left.

Connellsville got to within a couple of runs with a four-run sixth to make things interesting.

After back-to-back singles and an error to start the inning, Chase Sankovich made it 10-4 with an RBI single.

Firestone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Lee got hit by a pitch to make it 10-6. Kace Shearer grounded out to score Sankovich with the final Connellsville run.

Belle Vernon tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning when a fielder’s choice by Doppelheuer scored Faychak and Cole Matusik scored on shortstop Grayden Gillott’s error on the play.

Alex Nash picked up the win for Belle Vernon with 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Lee and Piasecki each had two hits for Connellsville.

Belle Vernon 7, Connellsville 2 (G2)

Belle Vernon completed the doubleheader sweep, adding three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a tight game.

Colton Lee had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for Belle Vernon (8-0). Two of those runs came in the seventh when he hit his double.

Jake Lee tripled for Connellsville (4-3) and Chase Sankovich had the lone RBI.

Belle Vernon scored three in the top of the second by playing small ball. Colton Lee drove in a run with an infield single and Austin Hoffman drove him in with a safety squeeze. Hoffman later scored on a bunt by Jaxson Bozek.

Sankovich made it 3-1 in the third with a sacrifice fly. Connellsville added a run in the fifth on a Belle Vernon error.

Uniontown Sr. Legion 2, Charleroi 0

Tate Musko threw a one-hitter and finished with 15 strikeouts to lead Uniontown’s senior legion team to a close win over Charleroi.

Jake Beveridge was the unfortunate loser of the pitching duel, allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struggled with his command, ending with seven walks. He did strike out seven.

Eahn Stevenson doubled for Uniontown.

Charleroi hosts Connellsville Sunday.

BV Jr. Legion 15, Ligonier Valley 1

Belle Vernon’s junior legion squad easily dispatched Ligonier Valley in five innings Thursday.

Chace Petrosky tripled and singled twice and Cam Black and Landon Bell each added three hits as part of Belle Vernon’s 18-hit attack.

Black (4) and Petrosky (3) totaled seven RBIs as teammates Max Manley and Nate Kostelnik combined for four hits and three runs batted in.

Black picked up the win on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing four hits and one earned run. He struck out four.

Tyler Queer had the lone RBI for Ligonier Valley (2-5).

Belle Vernon hosts Charleroi Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Uniontown Jr. Legion 15, Charleroi 4 Uniontown rolled to a six-inning win over Charleroi in Junior Legion play Thursday.

Nick Crouch had three hits, including a double, and Lane Smiley, Braylon Schoch and Ramaree Morgan each had two hits for Uniontown.

Uniontown led 4-2 after three innings then exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth.

Zeke Malanosky took the loss for Charleroi (2-5) after throwing 1 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs.

Smiley went 3 1/3 for Uniontown scattering five hits to get the win for Uniontown.

Charleroi Sr. Legion 14, Colonial #3, 5

Charleroi Post 22 rolled to a 14-5 win at Colonial Wednesday thanks to a seven-run top of the sixth inning.

Spencer Behrendt led the Charleroi offense with four hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Eddie Frizzell and Tyler O’Neil each added a double and two singles for Charleroi (6-2).

Tyler Fisher picked up the win on the mound after throwing a couple of innings in relief. He allowed one unearned run, one hit and struck out five.

Frizzell (3) and Joey Campbell, who had two hits, combed for five RBIs in the win.

Plum Jr. Legion 7, Charleroi 1

Charleroi’s Jr. Legion team dropped a 7-1 decision to Plum on the road Wednesday.

Jacob Gelder had a pair of hits for Charleroi (2-4). Gelder also took the loss on the mound, throwing five innings and being charged with six runs, all earned.
