Day camp planned in Monessen for local kids

By LADIMIR GARCIA lgarcia@yourmvi.com

Sessions will be held June 27 and July 25 at City Park in Monessen.

If your child is interested in ponies and agriculture, Penn State Extension and Monessen Councilwoman Karen Cosner will be hosting a free day camp June 27 and July 25.

Cosner hopes the camp adds something different for local youths to take part in, especially those who might want to participate in something other than sports.

“Monessen has a lot of programs that revolve around sports, but when I was a kid, I wasn’t interested in sports, I liked stuff like this,” Cosner said.

The day camp will be held in Monessen’s City Park and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The camp will be available for ages 8-18, and a free lunch will be provided for everyone who attends.

“I think it’ll be fun and we’re working with the food bank, they’re going to provide lunches, and I think it’ll be really, a good experience,” Cosner said.

Cosner encourages anyone interested in signing their child up for day camp to do it soon because it’s limited to the first 40 kids.

Youngsters will have the chance to meet Magic the pony and learn about horses and their needed care.

They will also learn about healthy foods, soil composition, the compost process and local agriculture, which includes a “STEM adventure.”

Cosner hopes the youths will enjoy it and they can offer more things next summer and host similar events.

“I just hope there’s really a spark in their eyes when they go home and think, ‘Oh, I’d like to do more of this’” Cosner said.

To registers for the day camp, email Cosner at kcosner@cityofmonessen. com. Registration applications are also available at Monessen City Hall. The deadline for registration is June 24.
