• You can scratch Charleroi from the list of unbeaten teams in the Fayette County League. The Magicians (31) wasted a strong pitching performance by Bob Pacella in a 1-0 second game at Farmington after a 6-3 victory in the first contest. Pacella only allowed only two hits with four strikeouts and three walks. One of those walks came in the third inning and led to the game’s only run when Greg Billy doubled with the bases loaded. Pitcher Howie King blanked the Magicians on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
• Bentworth freshman Alexandria Loos won two medals in the PIAA Class AA track and field championships at Shippensburg. Loos finished third in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter run.

• Josh Skomsky’s first nine-inning game turned out to be a memorable one. Skomsky, a left-hander from Monessen, allowed only two hits with 12 strikeouts and four walks as Charleroi’s American Legion downed Carmichaels, 4-1, to lift their record to 2-1. Skomsky didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning when John Gency doubled. Charleroi Coach Kevin Mollis said, “He was kind of excited because it was the first time he pitched nine innings.” Charleroi went ahead to stay with two runs in the second inning on Dennis Wingrove’s RBI single and A.J. Cooper’s bunt single.
• Two anchors of Charleroi’s offensive line will continue their football careers in college. Russ Poziviak, a three-year starter at offensive and defensive tackle is headed for West Liberty and Ryan Winkleblech, who started at the other offensive tackle, is headed for Clarion.
