VALLEY SPORTS HISTORY

2014

• Mitch’s Bail Bonds upped their record to 3-0 in Fayette County League play with a 6-5, 10-inning victory over NY Pizza in Hopwood. Brian Fisher pitched all 10 innings for Mitch’s striking out 10 batters. Ryan Kearns went 2 for 4 times at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Casey Teagarden also had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Adam Jacko and Jacob Newton each added a single to Mitch’s tally. Mitch’s coach Ryan Encapera was not completely pleased with the win, “If we hadn’t made so many errors the game would have been over a lot sooner.”

2004

• California baseball Coach Don Hartman is hoping that history repeats itself at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Township in the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Hartman’s Trojans (18-3) will face top-seeded Neshannock (18-1) in the Class A semifinals. California beat Union, 2-1, in nine innings at Burkett in the quarterfinals. Carmichaels (14-2) plays Sto-Rox in the second game of a doubleheader in the other Class A semifinal. The two winners will advance to the championship game at Falconi Field.

• The Mon Valley United lost to the North Hills United 2-0. This was the first win of the season for the North Hills team in the Western Pennsylvania Adult Soccer Leagues over 30 division. MVU player/coach Jeff Nartowicz said, “Obviously, they wanted it more than we did, we were rather sloppy at times. We had our chances to score but we failed to capitalize again and again.”

1994

• Melanie Kotlar was perfect and Charleroi was opportunistic as the Cougars and Frazier remained alive in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA softball playoffs. Kotlar pitched her second perfect game of the season as Frazier downed South Allegheny, 3-0. Charleroi, meanwhile, was a 9-7 winner at Mapletown despite getting only three hits. The Cougars were able to capitalize on three errors to get the win. Kotlar stuck out 12 batters raising her league leading total to 219.

• There are no unbeaten teams remaining in the Belle Vernon- Rostraver Softball League. Baker’s Pub handed Mint Lounge its first defeat of the season, 11-4. Norm Baker (triple and two singles), Dale Petrucci (three singles) and

Lonnie Todd (triple and a double) led the once beaten Baker’s Pub team. Chris Sraiznick had a double and two singles for 7-1 Mint. In other games, Collinsburg outslugged Elite 41-23, PNA downed Flasks 25-15, Newell Santa Barbara beat Tavern, 13-9 and Belle Vernon Moose beat S & B, 24-10.
