Mon Valley Chapter NSDAR

The May 11 meeting of Monongahela Valley Chapter National Society Daughters of the Americas (NSDAR) was held at noon in the Monongahela Public Library meeting room. A box lunch was served. Twelve members attended.

Regent Beth Licciardello led the group in the ritual, flag pledge, American’s Creed, preamble to the Constitution and the singing of the national anthem.

Heather Hart read the president general’s message and Grace Martin read the National Defense Report. Patti Tomasic read the Indian minute about Nancy Ward Hughes, a beloved woman and political leader of the Cherokee nation who advocated for peaceful co-existence with European Americans and retention of tribal hunting grounds.

Minutes of the April meeting were read by the chapter secretary, and the treasurer’s report was read by Nancy Komlos, in absence of the chapter treasurer.

Komlos discussed the “Adopt A Soldier” program and urged members to consider participating.

The chapter will begin selling RADA knives as a fundraiser this month. Those interested in purchasing these items should contact a chapter member.

The Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference was held April 25-27 near Lancaster. Licciardello and Mica Van Fossen attended and took nine donated backpacks as part of the “RuckSacks to BackPack” state program. The backpacks are given to children of Pennsylvania veterans.

Licciardello reminded members that the June 8 chapter meeting will be held at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver Township. The luncheon will be buffet style with members’ individual payments given to the treasurer.

Martin won the door prize, a patriotic star pillow donated by Carolyn Barger.

A memorial service was conducted by chapter Chaplain Joyce Cline for departed member Shirley Steel Grodecour. Cline read a brief biography about Shirley, who was an active member in Monongahela Valley Chapter NSDAR for 25 years and served in many service organizations in the Monongahela area. She was a longtime resident of Monongahela. She passed away on May 20, 2023.

At the conclusion of the memorial service, the chaplain gave the benediction.
