Warriors eliminate familiar foe

By JEREMY SELLEW

There isn’t a lack of familiarity when it comes to the Elizabeth Forward and West Mifflin softball teams.

The two teams play annually, including the Warriors’ 5-0 win over the Titans on April 27.

Less than a month later, the two teams met again in a WPIAL quarterfinal and the Warriors easily dispatched their rivals from across the river.

EF’s Shelby Telegdy fired a six-inning no-hitter and came a walk away from throwing a perfect game as the Warriors put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game at 10-0.

Not only did Telegdy shut the Titans down at the plate, but the senior pitcher was a menace when it was her turn in the batter’s box as well.

Telegdy went 4 for 4 with a homer, double, two singles and two RBIs for the Warriors (18-2).

Elizabeth Forward had no issues getting to Titans starter Rylie Dobnak, blitzing her with a five-run first inning.

Telegdy started things off just two pitches into the game, driving in Julia Resnik with an RBI double.

After an error, Telegdy’s courtesy runner Sammi Malek came in to score and Berlyn Holibaugh knocked in Carlee Soukup with an RBI single.

Julia Johnson followed and smacked the first of her two doubles in the game, scoring Addy Nigut and Holibaugh to make it 5-0.

The Warriors added single runs in the second and fourth innings before ending the game with the three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Telegdy smashed a solo homer to left out of Norwin’s field, Holibaugh had an RBI single and Nigut came in to score on a bunt by Alivia Grimm to end the game.

In the circle, Telegdy finished with 13 strikeouts through her six innings.

Holibaugh finished with three hits and Nigut added a pair.

Telegdy, Nigut, Holibaugh and Johnson each drove in two runs.

Dobnak was charged with 14 hits and nine earned runs for West Mifflin (11-9). She walked three.

With the win, the Warriors advance to the semifinals next week against Chartiers Valley. The Colts were equally impressive in their quarterfinal win Wednesday, blowing past defending state and WPIAL runner-up Montour,

19-2.

T. Jefferson 6, North Hills 4 The Jaguars picked up an upset win over No. 2 North Hills to advance to the Class 5A semifinals.

Emma DeSimone doubled twice and finished with three RBIs to carry the bulk of the offense for the Jaguars (10-7). Zoe Krizan had a pair of hits and Morgan Alisesky added two hits and two RBIs for TJ.

Aubrey Shaffer got the win, scattering nine hits and striking out three in a complete game.

Abigail Sutton was the loser for the Indians (14-5).

Emma Culver (three hits) drove in two runs for North Hills.

The Jaguars, the No. 7 seed, will face No. 11 Latrobe in the semifinals at a site, day and time to be determined.
