James “Jim” R. Stefl, a husband, father, and granddad, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, in Kalamazoo, Mich. Born on Nov. 19, 1938, in Monongahela, to James and Anne Stefl, Jim’s journey through life was marked by commitment to community and an adventurous spirit. Jim pursued his education, graduating from MacMurray College and later obtaining a master’s degree from the University of Alabama. It was during his time in Tuscaloosa, Ala., that he met his love, Janis Aimeé Walker. They exchanged vows on July 11, 1964, in Tuscaloosa. Together, they built a life filled with dedication to their community, lifelong friendships, and their three children. Throughout his professional career, Jim made a lasting impact as Dean of Men at Iowa Wesleyan and MacMurray College. Later, his entrepreneurial spirit and computer skills led him into the banking world, where his innovative ideas served his family well. Whether he was volunteering his time with the Scouts, or following his passions like model railroading, or boating, Jim approached most endeavors with a sense of adventure. In 1988, Jim and his family made Portage, Mich., their home where he worked in banking. He continued to take advantage of Michigan’s recreation including downhill skiing and biking. In 1993, he lost his wife, Janis after a years-long fight with cancer. Jim was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, where his faith was strong. He enjoyed his role within the congregation and served on various committees. Above all, Jim loved his family— father to Brian Scott (Carrie), Troy Alan (Tammy) and Karen Elaine (Kevin). His grandchildren, Jordan, Lauren, Ryan, Megan, Ian and Zoe brought him unbelievable happiness and pride. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 11, 2024, at LANGELAND FAMILY FUNERAL HOMES BURIAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 622 S Burdick St, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. Please come in casual dress — in honor of Jim’s lifelong love of flannel, we invite everyone to wear plaid. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Salvation Army, in honor of Jim’s commitment to service. As we say goodbye to Jim, let us take comfort in knowing that he will remain in our memories — he will be deeply missed and not forgotten.
