By obits

Carl Cesare Valeri, 85, of McMurray, passed away Monday, March 25, 2024. Carl is survived by his wife of 50 years, Theresa Plant Valeri; sons, Joseph A. Valeri and Martin C. (Joanna) Valeri; grandchildren, Nina and Marc Valeri; brother, Vincent (Mary “Sis”) Valeri; and many nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Cesare and Leanora Fresa Valeri; and siblings, Virgil Fragello, Colina Lockard and Margaret Kerr. Carl graduated in 1956 from Donora High School and later from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration. Carl served in the Pennsylvania National Guard and U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. From 1960-72, with Rockwell International, he was division controller for plants and foreign subsidiaries with extensive travel to Germany, Switzerland and France. In 1973, he was hired as CFO and secretary treasurer for Hankison Corporation in Canonsburg. From 1981 until retirement in 2002, he was vice president of finance at Berkshire Investment Corporation. In retirement, Carl volunteered many years doing construction with Habitat for Humanity and helping file taxes as an aide with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, as well as several years ringing a bell at a Salvation Army collection site during Christmastime. He was a longtime member of St. Benedict the Abbot Ben’s Men’s Club. He celebrated his Italian heritage making homemade wine with family and friends and with paisanos as a member of various Italian clubs. An avid gardener, he was instrumental in establishing a community garden at Waterdam Farms development, where he and his wife lived for 20 years. To his chagrin, his fellow gardeners honored him with a permanent plaque at the site, “Carl’s Community Garden.” A gathering of family and friends will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2024, until Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. John XXIII Parish, St. Benedict the Abbot Church, 120 Abington Drive, McMurray, PA 15317. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Pittsburgh, Attn: Jen Thoma, 3048 Pioneer Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, https://svdppitt.org/.
