Raymond “Ray” Bedner, 93, of Donora, died peacefully at his home on Monday, March 18, 2024. He was born on Sept. 4, 1930, the son of the late Michael P. and Mary V. Kopanic Bedner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth “Liz” (Smith) Bedner, and brothers John M. Bedner and Michael “Mickey” P. Bednar Jr. A 1948 graduate of Donora High School, Ray retired after many years as the sole proprietor of Bedner Plumbing and Heating. He also formerly maintained St. Michael’s Cemetery and St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, both in Donora. Throughout his life, Ray was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to quality. He always wanted the best for his family and worked to ensure that his children could pursue every educational opportunity available to them. In his early adulthood, he enjoyed hunting and playing softball in local leagues. After retirement, he gardened extensively and went fishing regularly with Liz. Ray was a tremendous sports enthusiast, with particular affection for all Pittsburgh sports teams and LeBron James. He enjoyed polka music and listened to it on the radio every weekend. Ray also loved fixing things and often engaged his children and their spouses in various restoration projects throughout his life. Ray is survived by his three children, Raymond Bedner Jr. (Dr. Ronald Valdiserri) of Georgia, Dr. Nelle Bedner Runge (Dr. Steven Runge) of Arkansas and Dr. Mary Bedner (Dr. William MacCrehan) of Maryland, and his beloved chihuahua, Tootsie. He is also survived by two siblings, Thomas Bednar of Monessen and Marcella Hynok of Donora, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ray’s children and great-niece, Melissa Lytle Garrick of Donora, gave generous and loving assistance to him for many years, and Tami Puckey of Belle Vernon provided loving care during the last year of his life. Arrangements have been entrusted to ANTHONY L.
