The spring sport slate has returned to the Mon Valley as more and more athletes are getting outside and starting their respective seasons.

Recently, there’s been a new offering that girls around the area have quickly taken to: flag football.

More and more schools across western Pennsylvania have started to get involved with the Girls Flag Football program through the Pittsburgh Steelers, including first-year members Belle Vernon, McKeesport and South Allegheny that are set to join Clairton in the 2024 season from April 1 to May 19.

The Bears are coming off of a strong first season that saw them finish in first place in their bracket.

The following schools were involved in 2023 alongside Clairton: Aliquippa, Ambridge, Ellis School, Gateway, Greensburg Salem, Moon, North Allegheny, North Catholic, Oakland Catholic, Obama Academy, Penn Hills, Shaler, Sto-Rox, West Allegheny, Westinghouse and Woodland Hills. There were two brackets: the gold, which was won by Moon, and the black, which was won by Clairton.

“This program has been beneficial for our girl athletes,” said Alexis Trubiani, the athletic director at Clairton. “I really fought to get this into our district, and it just took off. We’re trying to have two teams this year.”
