Irene Resetar – Monessen

By obits

Irene Resetar, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on March 16, 2024, at the age of 92. Born in Monessen on July 28, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Susan Crynick Sowko. Irene married the love of her life, Chuck, whom she met during a church choir trip to Kennywood. They settled in Monessen and raised four daughters together. She worked for many years at PNC Bank and served as treasurer for the St. Mary’s Ladies Guild. Irene’s passion for cooking was a heartfelt way to connect with her family and heritage. Pierogi-making day was always filled with laughter, love and the comforting aroma of potatoes and cheese. Christmas Eve was not complete without a steaming bowl of her homemade sauerkraut soup. Her love of these traditional dishes served as a delicious testament to her family’s rich heritage. She is survived by her four daughters, Susan (the late Col. Bob) Henderson, Theresa (Dave) Racine, Maryann (Stephen) Sopko and Cathy (Kevin) Jansma; grandchildren, Cathy Henderson, Michelle LaCotti (Racine), Nicole Roberts (Racine) and Anna Racine, Stephen Sopko and Sarah Sopko, Zach Jansma and Joe Jansma; great-granddaughters, Hannah Sopko, Abigail LaCotti and Eleanor LaCotti; her brother, Nicholas (Barbara) Sowko; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck”; and siblings, Theodore (Helen) and Evelyn (Thomas Kovach/Frank Novotny). The family would like to thank all the family, friends and caregivers who assisted Irene. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at ROBERT A. BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., Grand Boulevard and Marion Avenue in Monessen, www.billicksfuneralhome.com. Panachida will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 125 McKee Ave., Monessen. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
