For a new project based on the concept of “civic empathy,” two Donora historians could have focused on the borough’s historic smog disaster — but they figured that would be “easy.” “Let’s rip the Band-Aid off a little bit and discuss something that maybe people aren’t comfortable with discussing,” historian Mark Pawelec said. The historians embarked on newer territory for them: race.
