When Monessen’s Doug Crusan glances over his long football career, which he spent with the Monessen Greyhounds, Indiana Hoosiers, and the Miami Dolphins, there’s a lot to look over — and a whole lot to share.
To summarize, in high school, the 1964 graduate made the All-State Honorable Mention list. His teammates included three other future NFL players: Sam Havrilak, Eric Crabtree and Bill Malinchak.
In college, he anchored the Hoosiers’ offensive line before moving to defense in his senior season. Selected as a team captain, he was named All-Big Ten second team and was third-team All-American.
In his senior year, a shining 9-1 season, his Hoosiers won the Big Ten championship, earning a trip to the Rose Bowl. It was the university’s first trip ever to Pasadena.
There they met O.J. Simpson and the University of Southern California. Crusan had several tackles on the elusive Simpson. Indiana lost, but ended the season ranked fourth in the nation.
